The American Museum of Natural History was established in 1869 in a world very different from today.  Since then, the museum has played a leading role in exploration, discovery, and theoretical advances in the natural sciences. Central to these efforts has been the accumulation of one of the world's great Museum collections. Today, science at the American Museum of Natural History thrives and expands on these earlier accomplishments.  The work of scientific research, training, laboratory work, and collections management concern more than 200 scientific personnel, including more than 40 curators.  The museum's doctoral training program, which connects with five universities (Yale, Cornell, Columbia, New York Universities and the City University of New York), represents the largest and most diversified program of its kind offered by any unaffiliated museum.  The museum's library, with over 400,000 volumes, is one of the great natural history libraries in the world.

The Well Appointed House is proud to be a Patron's Circle level supporter of the American Museum of Natural History.  We would like to continue our support of this fine institution by donating 100% of the profits resulting from the sale of the following products to the museum.

Women for Women International builds bridges of mutual support and understanding while simultaneously helping women whose lives have been torn apart by war and conflict.  Across the globe, undeclared wars and internal armed conflicts have reached an unprecedented number. There have been more than 250 major wars since the end of World War II, resulting in over 23 million casualties. Modern warfare is no longer confined to battlefields.  Around the world, non-combatants are finding themselves in the direct line of fire, suffering greatly and becoming the anonymous and undercounted casualties of violent conflicts. In today’s wars, 90 percent of casualties are civilians, 75 percent of whom are women and children; a century ago, 90 percent of war casualties were male soldiers.

As never before, women are disproportionately affected by war and civil strife. Women are targeted for ethnic cleansing and subjected to rape as a tool of war. They lose male family members who leave to fight and are killed. Many are displaced from their own homes. When widowed by war, they are thrust into the role of sole provider, often without marketable skills or a viable means to earn an income and often in communities that do not value their place in society.

So far, The Well Appointed House has sponsored two women through this organization from Rwanda and we hope to sponsor many more.  Please visit this organization by clicking on their logo above for more information on how to get involved.

The Well Appointed House was founded in NYC and Central Park has a special place in our hearts.  We are proud to be members of the Central Park Conservators program.  With 25 million visitors each year to its 843 acres, Central Park is the most frequently visited urban park in the United States.  The conservancy sustains the park's maintenance, preservation and horticultural programs.  To manage the Park, Conservancy crews aerate and seed lawns; rake leaves; prune and fertilize trees; plant shrubs and flowers; maintain ball fields and playgrounds; remove graffiti; conserve monuments, bridges, and buildings; and care for water bodies and woodlands, controlling erosion, maintaining the drainage system, and protecting over 150 acres of lakes and streams from pollution, siltation, and algae.

The Well Appointed House donated over $1000 to the American Cancer Society by participating in the 2006 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Central Park.  We plan to walk again this year!
