As The Well Appointed House celebrates twenty-five years, we sat down with founder Melissa Hawks to reflect on how her perspective on home, design, and living well has evolved over time.

How has your idea of a “well-appointed home” evolved over the past 25 years?

When I launched The Well Appointed House in 2001, my focus was very much on the pieces themselves. I believed that beautiful, thoughtfully chosen furnishings should be accessible, not just to those near the right boutiques, but to anyone creating a home.

Today, my perspective has deepened. A well-appointed home is no longer about any single piece, but about how a space feels. It is how a home holds a family, hosts a gathering, and evolves through the seasons. It is not about formality, but about intention. A home that has been thoughtfully considered is one you can truly live in.

What makes a home feel truly complete to you today?

Light, layering, and life are the three things I return to again and again.

A home feels complete when it has warmth in its lighting, not just overhead fixtures, but lamps at every level that create a soft glow in the evening. It has layers of texture, a beautiful rug underfoot, something soft draped over a chair, a piece of art that tells a story.

And most importantly, it shows signs of life. Books on a shelf, flowers on a table, a bar cart ready for guests. A home should feel lived in, not staged.

What are the pieces you always return to?

There are a few essentials I always come back to.

A well-proportioned sofa in a fabric you truly love. A pair of lamps that bring both function and beauty. A coffee table that anchors the room.

But it is often the smaller details that signal real care. A monogrammed tray, a hand-painted cachepot with something growing inside, or a set of china that feels special enough to use every day. Those are the pieces that make a home feel personal.

How do you approach refreshing your home with each season?

Seasonality is something I feel deeply.

Spring is all about lightness. I bring in softer textures, cheerful color, and refresh the table with florals and lighter layers. Summer moves outdoors, where porches and gardens become an extension of the home.

Fall is about warmth and layering, and during the holidays, every detail becomes part of the experience, from the table to the mantel.

Refreshing your home is less about replacing everything and more about updating the moments that matter most.

What does “living well” mean to you today?

When I started, living well was largely about aesthetics and the joy of finding the perfect piece.

Today, it is something much more expansive. It is about how you live every day, the spaces you create, the places you go, and the way you experience them.

It is a perspective shaped by a life spent between places, coastal landscapes, classic towns, and destinations that bring a sense of ease and refinement. Living well is about creating beauty in all of it, at home and beyond.
