A table lamp is the most useful object in a classic room. It sets the light at eye level rather than overhead, it gives a console or a bedside its anchor, and in a hall or a powder room it does more for the atmosphere than any amount of ceiling fixture. We have been buying them in depth since 2001.

Hand-painted blue-and-white porcelain and ginger jar lamps, brass and tole, faux bamboo and gilt, gourd and melon forms, tortoise and shagreen, and the rechargeable cordless lamps that go where no outlet does. Most arrive with a shade; where they do not, our pleated, scalloped and gingham shades are sized to match.

A pair flanking a sofa, a single one on a hall console, a small one on the bar. If you are unsure of scale, our design team will size it to the table.
