The Well Appointed House was founded in 2001 by Melissa Hawks, while she was working as a young advertising executive in New York City. Recognizing the internet's potential at a time when very few retailers sold home décor online, Melissa envisioned an online destination that could bring the charm and character of specialty design shops to customers nationwide and beyond.
Her early leap into e-commerce helped establish The Well Appointed House as one of the longest-running and most-trusted luxury home décor websites in America.
Melissa's personal aesthetic is shaped by a lifetime of inspiration - from childhood summers on the sandy beaches of North Carolina to time lived in the classic suburbs of Boston and Greenwich, and family traditions in Cape Cod, Bermuda and Palm Beach. These influences continue to inspire both the timeless interiors of The Well Appointed House and the cheerful coastal lifestyle spirit of the Lily Cove collection.
